Technical Specifications and Purchasing Guidelines for Medical Masks

2026-01-15

Medical masks have always been essential for protecting against dust and cold, and they become especially valued by citizens when smoggy weather sets in.

Recently, a responsible official from the relevant national authorities stated that the draft “Technical Specifications for Everyday Protective Masks” is expected to be released before the end of this year. The draft covers requirements for mask materials, structural design, labeling and marking, and appearance. Key indicators include functional metrics such as particulate matter filtration efficiency, exhalation and inhalation resistance, and fit compliance.

Before the draft of the “Regulations” was released, the masks currently available on the market came in a wide variety of types—such as disposable masks, gauze masks, cotton masks, and activated-carbon masks. Of course, given their differing levels of effectiveness, their prices also varied considerably: some cheap ones cost just a few cents each, while others, more expensive ones, could go up to several dozen yuan per mask. Yet, some masks not only lacked any markings or labels but even had no packaging at all.

Doctors remind us that before putting on a mask, it’s important to ensure your hands are clean and hygienic. Also, avoid wearing masks for extended periods, as this can weaken the nasal mucosa and make you more susceptible to infections. Furthermore, when choosing a mask, don’t just focus on its appearance—make sure it’s clean and well-maintained—and select one that meets your specific needs.
