Can air pollution filters really work?

2026-01-15

Given the current environmental conditions, we’re frequently hit by smog and haze. Everyone has come up with their own creative solutions—though most people simply rely on masks to protect themselves. Nowadays, online platforms, retail stores, and medical supply shops are flooded with products labeled “dust- and smog-proof medical masks,” leaving consumers overwhelmed and confused. So, can medical masks really filter out smog and haze? Next, let’s take a closer look at this issue.

According to information obtained by Yu'an Medical’s editor, medical masks include ordinary medical masks, surgical masks, and medical protective masks. Among these, medical protective masks offer the highest level of protection. They are made of three layers: the inner layer is typically non-woven fabric; the middle layer consists of an ultrafine polypropylene fiber meltblown material; and the outer layer is either non-woven fabric or ultra-thin polypropylene meltblown material. These masks demonstrate remarkable efficiency in filtering out tiny virus-laden aerosols or harmful particulates, with a filtration efficiency of ≥95% against non-oily particles in the air.

Although these masks have excellent filtration performance, they still cannot provide complete filtration. This is because smog contains not only non-oily particulates—such as dust, acid mist, coal dust, cement dust, and microorganisms—but also oily particulates, including cooking fumes, oil mists, asphalt fumes, coke oven emissions, and diesel engine exhaust. Medical protective masks are unable to completely filter out oily particulates and gaseous chemical substances.

Our editor would like to remind you that medical protective masks are typically used in healthcare settings and are not particularly well-suited for everyday wear by the general public. For example, N95 masks are commonly used for occupational respiratory protection to block certain airborne microbial particles; however, due to their relatively thick texture, they aren't very comfortable for daily use.
